Iconostasis
A unique five-tier carved gilded iconostasis of the Army Cathedral of Christ’s Resurrection with one hundred and forty-nine icons of the XVIII-XIX centuries is a unique work of art in the Don and the South of Russia. The new iconostasis was created shortly after the fire of 1744, in which almost all the church utensils were lost. The grand complex with 23m width and 19m height has an unusual structure: in addition to the traditional five rows – the forefather, prophetic, deesis, festive and local – the iconostasis is crowned with an abbreviated Passion row with three carvings of the Crucifixion of Christ above each aisle, and in the lower part there are icons of the pedestal row ( otherwise it is called “sub-local”), which consists not only of rectangular compositions that are under the icons of the local rank but also of round and rectangular pictorial inserts on the corbels of the iconostasis .
On the image of the temple ” Christ’s Resurrection”, which can truly be recognized as the main masterpiece of the complex, there is an inscription in the lower-left part: “This holy icon was painted in Moscow in 1749 by Egoriy Ivanov Greek.” Most likely the whole complex belongs to the master and his artel. The faces on the icons, written by Egoriy Ivanov, are modeled with the help of bright highlights on a dark tone; each strand of the hair of the saints is written out with a thin brush. Gold is abundantly used in the design of garments; landscape backgrounds are very detailed and expertly executed. The peculiarity of his style is that the basic tone of faces is very dark, which was traditionally associated with the Greek icon-painting tradition.
